A city located in Colombia's southwest, it has more than 2 million inhabitants and has an area of 542 km². Cali is located in the valley of the Cauca River, on a plain limited by two mountain ranges.

Climate

Warm climate of approximately 24 degrees Celsius, with periods of rainfall and droughts. Most of the year, the climate in Cali is quite hot, so the outdoors are visited by the locals, as well as the waterway, which, being close to the mountain, the temperature is lower. At night the temperature drops to an average of 18 degrees Celsius.

Culture

Cali is the capital of the Department of Valle del Cauca. Its population comes from all parts of the country, most notably the Afro-descendant population from the peaceful coast. Their culture is then a mixture of all other races with a very strong influence of the black race.

On airplane

The Alfonso Bonilla Aragón International Airport (IATA:CLO) Serves the City, located in the Palmaseca district of Palmira, 20 minutes from the city. The following international airlines with direct flights operate in the country:

• American Airlines: One flight a day to Miami.
• Avianca: One flight a day to Miami. Several flights a week to New York and Madrid. 4 weekly flights to Guayaquil, with direct connection to Lima.
• Copa Airlines: 2 flights a day to Panama.
• LATAM: 3 weekly flights to Quito, direct connection to Lima.
• TAME with 3 weekly flights to Esmeraldas connecting with all other Ecuadorian cities.
• KLM: 3 flights a week to Amsterdam. Connecting to Central and Eastern Europe.

Domestic airlines are: Avianca, LATAM [1], Satena, Copa Airlines. Also low-cost: VivaColombia [2], EasyFly [3]. There are more than 15 flights a day to Bogotá, 5 to both Medellin airports and also direct flights to other Colombian cities (Cartagena de Indias, San Andrés, Barranquilla).

By train

In Colombia it is not common to use the train, in some parts it is used only for freight transport. Currently there is an enabled road connecting with the city of Armenia, although construction of a suburban train is planned in the metropolitan area

By bus

The transportation terminal, located in the north of the city, receives and takes buses to the nearest destinations, and connects with the country's major cities. The following transport companies operate at the terminal:

The city of Cali is longitudinally crossed by the Troncal route of the West (25), so you can get from Ecuador to the south, and from other cities of Colombia to the north.

Several means of transport co-exist in the city, the most important of which is the Integrated Mass Transport System MIO, a project that has been under way since 2005, which seeks to meet 98% of the demand for mobility in the city; in its first year of operation (2009), it covers only 12 per cent of that demand. There are more than 13 public transport companies by buses, bushes and collectives; Each one identifies their buses by the color of their body and has assigned routes; however, these routes will slowly disappear to give way to the mass transportation system: Western Integrated Mass (MIO), to the extent that it meets demand.

Public transportation in Santiago de Cali is worth $2,000 pesos every day and at any time.

By taxi

Another alternative mobility is the yellow-colored taxis, which must carry a 'Taxi-censored' sticker on the front glass, to make sure it is a vehicle authorized for that purpose.

In car

It is recommended to take into account the days of vehicular restriction (known as 'Pico and badge'), which according to the last number of the plate, may not be circulating on a given day of the week between 7:00 am and 10:00 am and between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm.

Historical sites

• Plaza de Caycedo: The main park of the city, composed of palm trees and benches, surrounded by historic buildings such as La Catedral, El Edificio Otero, among others. In the center, a statue of Joaquin de Caycedo and Cuero, the proverb of the city, was erected. It is a quiet and well-guarded spot, with many casual employees such as bootblowers and lottery vendors.

• Christ the King A statue on top of a hill, similar to Christ of Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It offers a great view of the city and a good physical exercise to climb the mountain. It is recommended that you go along with it because both the climb and the top are frequented by thieves.

• The Hermitage: A Gothic-style church located in the center of the city. It was built in 1678 and then restored in 1930. It is one of the symbols of the city.

• Granada neighborhood: The northern district of the city has become the epicenter of gastronomy with a wide variety of restaurants. The hotel is home to the best restaurants in the city, although the mobility of the sector is difficult due to the large number of car flows for residential roads.

• Three Crosses Hill: Top of the hill in Montebello district, adorned with three great crosses and a lot of communication antennas. From there you can see a panoramic view of the city from North to South.

• Tower of Cali: The tallest building in the city, located on the banks of the Cali River; at the top of it is a viewpoint.

• Church of San Antonio Colonial church on top of hill of the same name. Another great view of downtown.

• Statue of Belalcázar, Like the southern city of Popayán, Cali was founded by Spanish Sebastian of Belalcázar. There is a statue in honor of Belalcázar in a residential area west of Cali, from where you can see the entire city. Being inside the city, it is a safer place than Christ the King.
• San Antonio neighborhood: Traditional neighborhood where you can still appreciate the colonial architecture. Upstairs is the Church of San Antonio. The neighborhood has several restaurants with a wide range of international and local dishes, including Lulodka, Mariposa Language, Ciro's, Tratoria, Macondo, Atahualpa, Fritanga J&C, among others. The Hill on which the Church is located, and around which the neighborhood grew, serves as a watchtower where you can see a large part of the city. There is a permanent presence of artisans and street sales.
• Church of San Antonio Colonial church on top of hill of the same name. Another great view of downtown.

Museums

Museum of Modern Art La Tertulia.

• Cali Zoo, a non-profit Foundation that runs the zoo, with a large number of endemic species and from various places around the world. It is a spacious and comfortable place; Animals have plenty of space for them and are well maintained. It hosts more than 800 animals of 170 species. Recommended: Bengal tigers, butterflies and birds.

• Gold Museum of the Bank of the Republic, Street 7 No. 4-69. A Museum containing archeological displays of vasijas and gold of pre-Columbian cultures that inhabited the region. There are also small art exhibitions. The entrance is free and open to the public from Monday to Saturday.

• La Merced Archeological Museum, located in the center of the city, is a Colonial-type church, with an archeological museum that exhibits pre-Hispanic objects and religious art from ancient cultures that inhabited the region in pre-Columbian times.

• Museum of Colonial Art: Next to the Archeological Museum La Merced. In its center is the Pila de Crespo, one of the first sources that supplied liquid to the inhabitants of San Antonio. It contains several pieces of religious and colonial art such as murals, garments, gold pieces, ancient bibles.

• Chicken Sancocho - A very popular chicken soup in the region. The best sancochos are found in a village called Geneva, about an hour's drive from Cali.
• White delicacy - A sweet made of cooked sugar and milk, similar to arequipe.
• Chontaduro - A fruit of a pacific tropical palm that is sold on the street, seasoned with salt or honey. It is attributed to aphrodisic effects.
• Mango viche - Unmatured green mango, which is sold on the street and eaten with salt and lemon juice.
